Kate shares her two hospital birth stories in this episode. She had a positive hospital birth with an OB group for her first birth. She got a membrane sweep at 38+5 and the next night her water broke and kickstarted labor. She experience back labor and needed pitocin to move labor along. She opted for an epidural and with the help of her doula ended up delivering just 24 hours after her water broke and only had to push for a few contractions.
After her first birth, she discover the birth hour podcast and opted for her second birth to use a local midwife group with the hopes of having more open conversations about her care and autonomy with her labor and delivery. She had planned to do an unmedicated hospital birth this time and used the same doula as her first birth. Due to high blood pressure readings at home at 37+6, she opted to go to the OB ER and it was decided to induce her due to being diagnosed with gestational hypertension. Her doula was on vacation and a backup doula she had never met stepped in for support. After 2 rounds of oral cytotec and within 8 hours of starting the induction Kate dilated to a 10 and experienced the fetal ejection reflex and birthed her baby unmedicated with the hospital OB, as her midwife did not make it to the birth in time.
